A woman criticised D.L. Moody for his methods of evangelism in attempting to win people to the Lord. Moody replied, “I agree with you. I don’t like the way I do it either. Tell me, how do you do it?” The woman replied, “I don’t do it.” Moody retorted, “Then I like my way of doing it better than your way of not doing it!”
How often are people criticised and hung out to dry for things they do in their sincere desire to please the Lord? Sadly, Christians can be among the most cruel people in the way we use our tongues to cut people up. It should be the opposite. We should be the ones carrying the message of hope, love, acceptance and forgiveness, doused with encouragement.
There is a saying that I adhere to very closely these days… “Don’t criticise the ‘What’ until you know the ‘Why’. We often criticise things we fail to understand. This woman criticised Moody’s methods when she failed to even have an alternative! Was she evangelising? NO! Was her motives impure? I think so.
Let us all be ready to encourage, build up and bless people with our tongues this week. Particularly if they are really desiring to service the Lord.
