Is Tongues For Today?

In reflection of receiving the gift of ‘speaking in tongues’ many years ago, I think of some of the arguments that well-meaning Christians used against this gift of the Holy Spirit.

Following is a brief sample…

1 Corinthians 13:8—”prophecy, gift of tongues, words of knowledge will cease but love lasts forever.’ They believe that such gifts passed at the death of the last apostle. Answer: Not mentioned in the Bible. The verse quoted is speaking about perfection in heaven where we won’t need the gifts. Notice it says that knowledge will cease as well!

The gifts of the Spirit are for the growth, edification and comfort of the church. We need the gifts & God requires us to use them.

Another funny argument is… “Tongues are the ‘least important therefore, I can do without it.”

Answer: This is an arrogant, ill-informed argument. Firstly, where does the Bible state this? Second, since when does God give a “not important gift’ to anyone? James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father who created all the lights in the heavens.” Third, the gift of tongues is a beautiful aspect of our essential prayer life. Read 1 Corinthians 14:1-5.

I am so glad God has given me this great gift. I encourage you to use that gift from God. Exercise it daily in your prayer life. Then you will agree with me that the gift of tongues is for now and for use in this church.

Love from your pastor, Daren.
