We recommenced Life Group last week continuing with the broad subject of Transformation. We can only transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit through submission to Him and not by our good will or striving. Therefore if we don’t allow God to take control of our will , any visible transformation will not exist. (‘For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.’ Matthew 12:34b)
We show the transformation by the way we live, by what we do, by what fills our minds and by what we talk about. We are all under construction and will make mistakes along the way. All mistakes and sin are only dealt with through true repentance.
Our study last Tuesday night began to cover the evil of the tongue and the damage it can and does cause when God isn’t in control of it.
James 3:6 ‘The tongue is that kind of flame. It is a world of evil among the parts of our bodies, and it completely contaminates our bodies. The tongue sets our lives on fire, and is itself set on fire from hell.’
The question was raised by the study writer concerning verse 6, ‘Is James overstating his case?’ The answer is quite simple. Absolutely not.
We might not engage in the obvious evil of rumour mongering and gossip but how about manipulative or offensive words in some way? Or coming across as two faced? Flattering words are often used to manipulate. It isn’t too difficult for an astute person to recognise the difference between flattery and encouragement. Flattery is always used with unsavory motives—to get something or manipulate someone but encouragement is to build up and lift with no intention for personal gain.
A transformed tongue is something we must always seek God for. All of God’s children, by mere fact that we are in His family, desire to speak blessing, joy, life and light into His creation.
Whenever you might be tempted to enter the dark and evil world of gossip or shallow flattery, visualise the nail-prints in the hands and feet of our Saviour and the blood that was poured out for that person’s salvation and ask if it’s really worth it. Stay clean children of the King and use your tongue to bless someone this week.
God bless you heaps and may your life be filled with every spiritual blessing! Love, Pastor Daren.
