A few weeks back, I preached from Matthew 25:14-30, the “Parable of the Talents”. Each servant was given a portion of talents and 2 of the 3 doubled what the master gave them. The third was full of fear and buried it rather than even depositing it into the bank to gain interest.
Jesus gave that talent to the one who gained the most so that lazy servant lost even the small amount that he had.
This can be very true of us as well. God calls us to be faithful with what He has graciously given us and to use it for His glory.
This story was used by the great John Wesley and as he was preaching up a storm, a hot-headed woman rudely interrupted the man of God by shouting, “My talent is to speak my mind”, John Wesley replied, “Woman, God wouldn’t care one bit if you buried that talent!”
Isn’t it amazing how some people just simply miss it. What I mean is this. As Wesley ministered on the need for us to use all He has given us for God’s glory , this woman uses that same scripture to justify her loose, gossiping tongue! Nothing to do with what the preacher was saying or what Jesus was sharing.
When we read the Word of God, always be sure to do the following…
- Keep it in Context—Read the whole chapter or more, not just a single verse
- Line it up with God’s Character—The Word is never in conflict with itself
- Line it up with other Passages of Scripture—the Word supports itself and is totally reliable
- Understand the Background and Historical Events—this will give you a greater grounding to what is truly being said
- 2Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.”
Be very careful with the Word of God, it wasn’t written to support our beliefs but for us to be transformed to new life in Christ.
God bless you awesome church!!! Love Ps Daren
