What would be the point of having a church if God wasn’t in the centre of it? A bit senseless wouldn’t you think?
After attending church with his father one Sunday morning, and before getting into bed that evening, a little boy knelt at his bedside and prayed, “Dear God, we had a good time at church today, but I wish you had been there.”
When we read Luke 5:17-26, we see the story of the paralysed man lowered through the roof into the house in order to reach Jesus. The reason for going through the roof? Verse 19 gives the answer...Due to the great crowd. The story goes on to tell us that he was healed and forgiven of his sins. Jesus is very interested in firstly, forgiveness of sins but also in healing the sick.
But the one point I really love from this story is the part of the huge crowd that gathered in the house. This was a normal house, with a normal family on a normal day, I guess. But something wasn’t so normal. Something was different. Something was in the air.
The crowd gathered to watch the “Ten Commandments” on TV? Did they come to play Monopoly? Did they come for a lightshow spectacular? Did they gather to hear the Hillsong band play ’Shout to the Lord’?
They packed that house that day because Jesus was in the house! Jesus showed up. Jesus was present to show His love, compassion and grace to a generation.
